Acoustic AI: How to Listen to Motor Faults Before They Vibrate [2026 Guide]
Are your vibration sensors too expensive? Discover how Acoustic AI uses $5 USD microphones to detect damaged bearings weeks before catastrophic failure.

👂 Machines Talk. Are You Listening? #
Any expert mechanic will tell you: "It sounds funny". That subtle hum is the first sign of failure, long before the machine starts improving or vibrating. Today, AI has digitized that "expert ear".
The Vibration Problem (It's Expensive) #
The gold standard for predictive maintenance has been vibration analysis. But it has one problem: The Cost.
- An industrial piezoelectric accelerometer is expensive per point.
- Needs rigid mounting (drilling or epoxy).
- Needs expensive shielded cabling.
Result: You only monitor 5% of your critical assets. The other 95% (small pumps, belts, fans) fly blind.
The Acoustic Revolution (It's Cheap) #
Acoustic AI changes the game using MEMS technology (Micro-Electro-Mechanical Systems). The same microphones found in your phone.
📉 Hardware Cost
Low
For a high-fidelity digital MEMS microphone.
🛠️ Installation
Non-Intrusive
You don't need to touch the machine. Just place the sensor near it.
How It Works? (The Science) #
We don't record audio for a human to listen to. We use TinyML (Machine Learning at the Edge).
- Capture: The mic takes an audio sample (e.g., 1 second).
- Spectrogram (FFT): We convert sound into a visual frequency image.
- Inference: A neural network trained on the device (Edge) classifies the image: "Normal", "Inner Race Bearing Fault", "Cavitation".
- Alert: If anomaly detected, send signal via MQTT to central system.
Use Case: Pump Cavitation Detection
Cavitation sounds like "gravel passing through the pipe". It is destructive.
- • Traditional Method: Wait for vibration (damage done) or expensive flowmeter.
- • iGromi Acoustic Method: External mic on casing. Trained to identify "collapsing bubbles" sound.
- • Result: Alert within < 5 seconds of cavitation start. Auto-stop.
iGromi + Edge AI #
Our iGromi Gateways support digital audio input and run classification models locally. We don't send audio to the cloud (privacy + bandwidth). We only send the diagnosis.
