How to Calculate Industrial Carbon Footprint: Formulas
Scope 1, 2 and 3 formulas applied to a real plant, the basic emission factor equation, and the data you need to measure instead of guessing.

The Industrial Sustainability Challenge #
Calculating your carbon footprint is no longer an optional "PR" metric; it has become a regulatory and financial requirement. Factories in Latin America now have to report their emissions to access green financing or to export to markets such as the European Union.
The 3 Emission Scopes #
To calculate your footprint correctly, the international standard (GHG Protocol) classifies emissions into three scopes:
- Scope 1 (direct): Emissions from sources you control. Examples: diesel burned in your plant's boilers, fuel for your delivery trucks or refrigerant leaks.
- Scope 2 (indirect, energy): Emissions from generating the electricity you buy and consume.
- Scope 3 (value chain): Emissions from your suppliers (for example, the footprint of producing the plastic you buy) and outsourced transportation.
The Basic Formula (Emission Factor) #
The calculation comes down to one fundamental equation:
CO2e emissions = Activity data × Emission factor
For example, if your plant uses 10,000 kWh of electricity per month (activity data), you multiply it by your national grid's emission factor (e.g., 0.4 kg CO2e/kWh). That gives a total of 4,000 kg of CO2e emitted.
💡 The Electricity Bill Mistake
Most factories calculate their footprint by reading the power bill at the end of the month. That's a strategic mistake: it doesn't tell you which machine is using energy inefficiently.
Automating the Calculation with IoT #
Collecting data by hand in spreadsheets is inaccurate and eats up engineering time. The natural next step is an EMS (Energy Management System).
With iGromi OS, we install smart electrical meters on your sub-panels. The system cross-references your real-time kWh consumption with production metrics from iGromi MES. The result is a live dashboard that shows not only your total carbon footprint but exactly how many grams of CO2 you emit for every finished product that leaves the line.
