iGromi vs SAP ME: A Lean MES vs the ERP Monster (2026)
SAP ME (Manufacturing Execution) promises seamless integration with your manufacturing ERP system. At what cost? A technical comparison for plants that already run (or are evaluating) SAP.

SAP ME: The Promised "Integrated Dream" #
SAP sells the dream: "If you already run SAP ERP, adding SAP ME is trivial. Perfect synchronization, one vendor."
The reality: SAP ME costs more than 3 production lines, takes 2 years to implement, and 60% of plants use it at 30% of its capacity.
⚠️ Critical Disclaimer
If your plant DEPENDS on real-time SAP PP/MM integration (pharma, regulated chemicals), SAP ME may be unavoidable. This comparison is for plants that:
- Are evaluating SAP ME for the first time.
- Run SAP ERP, but manufacturing does NOT need critical synchronization.
- Want OEE without the full SAP ecosystem.
Comparison Table: Integration vs Independence #
| Feature | iGromi | SAP ME |
|---|---|---|
| Setup cost (5 lines) | Quoted per plant | High setup + annual AMS |
| Implementation time | Focused pilot | 12-24 months |
| SAP ERP integration | REST API (manual) | Native (PP/MM/QM) |
| Requires an SAP Basis team | ❌ No | ✅ Yes (2-3 people) |
| OEE out of the box | ✅ Preconfigured | ❌ Requires custom ABAP |
| Serial-level traceability | Basic (batch) | Full (serial) |
| Digital work instructions | Basic PDF/HTML | SAP Enable Now integrated |
| SAP consultants needed | 0 | 3-8 (permanently) |
| Mobile dashboards | ✅ Responsive PWA | ⚠️ Fiori (slow on mobile) |
| Vendor lock-in | None (you export everything) | Total (migrating = rebuilding) |
1. Cost: The "SAP Tax" in Action #
SAP ME (5 lines, integrated with SAP ERP):
- ME licenses: perpetual, but obsolete within 7 years with S/4HANA
- Additional SAP licenses: PCo (Plant Connectivity), MII
- Infrastructure: servers + a HANA database if you want real time
- Implementation: SAP consultants billed by the hour, the largest line item
- Training: SAP ME courses in Walldorf or remote
- AMS (Application Management Services): a recurring cost every year
Year 1 total: licenses, infrastructure, consulting and training combined.
5-year total: add four years of AMS.
iGromi (5 lines):
- Base platform + modules: quoted per plant (no per-tag fees)
- Hardware: an Edge PC on site (quoted)
- API integration with SAP (optional): quoted as a module
- Support and maintenance: quoted separately
iGromi's cost depends on how many lines, cameras and users you connect; it is quoted per plant. Compare it against the SAP ME total with your quote in hand.
2. Implementation: The 18-Month "SAP Project" #
SAP ME (real timeline):
- Months 1-4: Blueprint workshops, AS-IS/TO-BE mapping, architecture design.
- Months 5-10: Custom ABAP development, Work Center configuration in PP, MII-PCo-PLC integration.
- Months 11-15: UAT testing (where you discover Quality still has to be integrated with QM).
- Months 16-18: "Big bang" go-live (or a spectacular failure and a 6-month extension).
The brutal truth: 70% of SAP ME projects run 6-12 months late, and the final budget usually lands far above the original.
iGromi (lean timeline):
- Stage 1: Install the Edge PC and connect the PLCs.
- Stage 2: Configure products; OEE dashboards go live.
- Stage 3: Basic integration with SAP via API (optional).
Go-live: at the end of a focused pilot, with or without SAP ERP.
3. The "Perfect Integration" Trap #
This is what SAP sells: "With SAP ME, your production syncs automatically with SAP PP/MM. Zero data duplication."
The reality:
- Yes, SAP ME reads production orders from SAP PP automatically.
- But you have to configure 50+ integration parameters.
- Every change in MM (a new material) means updating ME (it is not "automatic").
- Reports pull data from 3 modules (PP, ME, QM) → painfully slow.
iGromi + SAP (hybrid approach):
- iGromi captures actual production in real time.
- Once a day, it exports completed production to SAP PP via REST API.
- SAP stays the "system of record"; iGromi is the "system of execution".
Advantage: iGromi is fast because it does NOT carry SAP's complexity. SAP still holds the final numbers for management reporting.
4. OEE: SAP ME Does NOT Calculate It Out of the Box #
This surprises everyone: SAP ME has no native OEE.
To get OEE in SAP ME you need to:
- Code a custom calculation in ABAP.
- Create Z-tables to store micro-stops.
- Build a custom Fiori app for OEE dashboards.
- Integrate with SAP Analytics Cloud (another $$$ license).
Cost: additional custom development, with SAP consultants.
iGromi:
- OEE is calculated automatically from the moment you connect the sensor.
- A prebuilt dashboard shows Availability, Performance and Quality.
- Drill down by shift, operator and SKU.
Cost: no custom development; it ships in the OEE module, quoted per plant.
5. ROI: Justifying the Investment #
Example: Pharmaceutical Plant (5 aseptic lines)
SAP ME scenario:
- Full implementation (year 1): licenses, consulting and infrastructure
- AMS (years 2-5): a recurring annual cost
- 5-year total: ask your SAP partner for the complete figure before comparing.
SAP ME benefits:
- Full serial traceability → lower recall costs.
- SAP QM integration → more efficient audits.
- Lower WIP → less tied-up capital.
- 5-year total: estimate it with your own recall, audit and WIP data.
ROI: at a regulated pharma plant it can be positive, but the payback takes years.
iGromi scenario:
- Quoted per plant: depends on how many lines, cameras and users you connect
iGromi benefits:
- OEE +9% (without advanced APS) → more output from the same lines.
- 5-year total: estimate it with your own OEE data.
ROI: subtract your quote from that estimated benefit and compare it with SAP ME's.
"SAP ME delivers MAXIMUM benefit if you are a regulated pharma plant. iGromi delivers MAXIMUM ROI if all you need is OEE without the SAP bureaucracy."
6. When SAP ME Is Unavoidable #
1. Pharma/Biotech Plants
If you make drugs, the FDA/EMA require serial traceability. SAP ME + QM is the validated standard.
2. SAP S/4HANA Greenfield
If you are implementing S/4HANA from scratch, adding ME in the same project reduces complexity (in theory).
3. Ultra-Complex Discrete Manufacturing
If you build turbines with 10,000+ components and 20-level BOMs, SAP ME + PP is the only enterprise option.
7. When iGromi Makes More Sense #
1. You Run SAP ERP, but PP Is "Administrative Only"
If you use SAP for accounting and sales, but production does NOT need critical synchronization, iGromi gives you OEE without touching SAP.
2. A Realistic Budget
If an SAP ME budget makes you want to cry, iGromi delivers the core of the benefit with a per-plant quote.
3. You Needed OEE YESTERDAY
If your boss gave you 1 month, SAP ME is physically impossible (12 months minimum).
8. The Hybrid Strategy: iGromi + SAP (Best of Both Worlds) #
Smart plants do this:
- iGromi: Captures actual production, OEE, micro-stops and quality in real time.
- SAP PP: Remains the official system (production orders, BOMs, standard costing).
- Integration: iGromi exports completed production to SAP once a day via API.
Benefits:
- You skip the SAP ME investment (you don't need it).
- You get real OEE after a focused pilot.
- SAP keeps the final numbers for management and financial reporting.
Verdict: Mercedes Maybach vs Tesla Model 3 #
SAP ME is a Mercedes Maybach. German luxury, perfect integration with the SAP ecosystem, prestige. But extremely expensive, and only a certified mechanic may touch it.
iGromi is a Tesla Model 3. Modern technology, fast, self-sufficient. It doesn't carry the SAP prestige, but it gets you just as far.
