iGromi vs SAP PM: When David Beats Goliath (Sometimes)
SAP PM is the most widely used maintenance module in the world's top manufacturing ERP system. It's also the most hated. Can a Chilean startup compete? A fearless analysis.

The Forbidden Conversation #
Nobody in maintenance dares to question SAP out loud. It's like criticizing the boss in the leadership meeting.
But in private, everyone says the same thing: "SAP PM is powerful... but I hate it."
This comparison goes against the grain. I'm not promising that iGromi is "better" than SAP (it isn't). But I'm going to show when replacing it makes sense.
⚠️ Brutally Honest Disclaimer
If you've had SAP running for 5+ years, with in-house SAP consultants, and your plant depends on the MM/PM/PP integration, DO NOT REPLACE SAP. Migrating would be suicide.
This comparison is for plants that:
- Are evaluating SAP for the first time (and got scared by the price).
- Have SAP... but only use 10% of what it can do.
- Are running on "Shadow IT" (using Excel because SAP is too slow).
Comparison Table: Reality Without the Makeup #
| Feature | iGromi | SAP PM |
|---|---|---|
| Setup Cost (200-asset plant) | Quoted per plant | High implementation cost + annual licenses and consulting |
| Implementation Time | Scoped pilot | 6-18 months |
| Learning Curve | 2 hours (training) | 40+ hours (certification) |
| Consultants Required | 0 (direct support) | 2-5 (forever) |
| Native IoT | ✅ Core | ❌ (requires SAP Leonardo $$$) |
| Integration with SAP (the irony) | REST API (manual) | Native (obviously) |
| Advanced Financial Management | ❌ Basic | ✅ NASA-grade cost accounting |
| Approval Workflows | Simple (2 levels) | Unlimited (configurable) |
| Speed (create a work order) | 15 seconds | 3-5 minutes (20+ required fields) |
| Customization | Limited (YAML config) | Unlimited (custom ABAP) |
1. Price: The Myth of the Promised ROI #
SAP sells the ROI dream. "Yes, it costs a lot to implement, but you'll more than make it back."
The reality:
- Implementation: months of SAP consultants billing by the hour.
- Licenses: an annual fee per named user.
- Annual maintenance (AMS): 18-22% of the license cost.
- Permanent consultants: a fixed annual cost (because nobody in-house knows ABAP).
5-year total (mid-size plant, 10 users): the sum of everything above, several times the initial implementation.
iGromi:
- Base platform + modules: quoted per plant (no per-tag fees).
- Hardware: an Edge PC on site (quoted).
- Support and upkeep: quoted separately.
The cost of iGromi depends on how many lines, cameras and users you connect; it's quoted per plant. Compare it against this SAP PM total with your quote in hand.
2. "SAP Is Slow" Is Not a Myth #
I've timed this at 5 different plants:
Time to create a simple work order:
- SAP PM: 3-5 minutes (transaction IW31, 15 required fields, validations, cost centers, categorizations).
- iGromi: 15 seconds (pick the asset, describe the problem, submit).
Real impact: A technician who creates 10 work orders a day loses 40 minutes in SAP vs. 2.5 minutes in iGromi.
Over 1 year: 160 hours of wages wasted (on data entry alone).
"SAP PM was designed by accountants for accountants. iGromi was designed by mechanics for mechanics."
3. IoT: SAP's Achilles' Heel #
SAP PM was born in 1992. The concept of "IoT" didn't exist yet.
To add sensors to SAP you need:
- SAP Leonardo (SAP's IoT platform): another annual license.
- Middleware (MQTT broker, OPC-UA gateway).
- Consultants who know ABAP + JavaScript + IoT ($$$).
- 6-12 months of custom development.
iGromi:
- Connect the Modbus sensor to the gateway.
- The system detects it automatically.
- Set the alert threshold.
- Done.
Example: A plastics plant needed to monitor extruder temperatures.
- SAP Leonardo quote: an initial setup fee plus an annual license.
- With iGromi: quoted per plant (10 PT100 sensors + Edge PC), no per-tag fees. Up and running in a scoped pilot.
4. When SAP PM Is IRREPLACEABLE #
I'm not going to lie to you. There are cases where iGromi can't even come close to SAP PM:
Multi-Plant Multinationals
If you have 20 plants in 10 countries, with consolidated accounting, multi-currency and SOX audits... SAP is your only realistic option.
Regulated Industries
Pharmaceutical, nuclear and petrochemical operations under ultra-strict FDA/ISO certification need SAP's extreme traceability.
Deep Integration with SAP MM/PP/FI
If you already run SAP as your ERP and need Maintenance to sync with Purchasing/Production/Finance in real time... staying on SAP PM is the logical choice.
5. When Replacing SAP with iGromi Makes Sense #
Active Shadow IT
If your technicians use Excel because "SAP is too slow," you have a problem. iGromi gives them speed without sacrificing traceability.
Satellite Plants Without SAP
If your corporate office runs SAP but a new plant doesn't justify the cost of SAP licenses, iGromi is the perfect bridge.
Standalone Maintenance (No ERP)
If your maintenance department does NOT need to sync with finance/purchasing, paying for SAP PM is like buying a Boeing 747 to go grocery shopping.
6. The Human Cost: User Burnout #
This doesn't show up in TCO (Total Cost of Ownership) calculations, but it's real:
SAP PM burns users out:
- 15 different screens just for maintenance.
- Cryptic codes (PMIS, IW31, IW38, IW39...).
- Error messages in German, badly translated.
- A 1995 interface (literally).
Result: High turnover of trained staff. Every time you lose a "SAP Expert," you lose months of knowledge.
iGromi is boring to use (in a good way):
- A WhatsApp-style interface.
- Big buttons, no codes.
- If you can use Instagram, you can use iGromi.
7. Cost Compared: A 150-Asset Plant #
SAP PM scenario:
- Implementation: consultants + setup licenses
- Licenses (8 users): annual fee
- AMS (maintenance): an annual percentage of the licenses
- Part-time consultant: annual cost
- 5-year total: implementation plus five years of licenses, AMS and consultant
iGromi scenario:
- Base platform + modules: quoted per plant (no per-tag fees)
- Hardware: an Edge PC on site (quoted)
- Support and upkeep: quoted separately
The cost of iGromi depends on how many lines, cameras and users you connect; it's quoted per plant. Compare it against the 5-year SAP PM total with your quote in hand.
💡 The Uncomfortable Question
What would you do with the money that goes to SAP consultants today? Pay for more consultants... or buy 2 predictive maintenance units and train your team in RCA (Root Cause Analysis)?
8. The Hybrid Strategy (For the Brave) #
Some plants use this setup (and it works):
- SAP PM: Only for planned maintenance and critical spare parts ($$$) that need financial approval.
- iGromi: For daily corrective work, predictive IoT and quick work orders that don't hit the balance sheet.
Upside: You cut SAP users from 15 to 3 (area managers only), and your annual license spend with them.
Risk: Manual integration (export from iGromi, import into SAP once a week).
Final Verdict: David Doesn't Always Win #
SAP PM is the battle tank of maintenance. Unstoppable, complete, battle-tested.
iGromi is the tactical drone. Fast, affordable, perfect for specific missions.
If you've had SAP in place for years: Stick with SAP, but consider iGromi as an IoT add-on.
If you're evaluating SAP for the first time: Start with a scoped iGromi pilot. If it doesn't cover your needs, then invest in SAP.
"SAP PM can do EVERYTHING. iGromi only does what you ACTUALLY need. Sometimes, less is more."
Stuck in SAP and looking for a way out?
Let's talk. I'll show you how real plants migrated (or went hybrid) and lived to tell the tale.
