The Big IIoT Lie: Why 75% of Dashboards Are Useless

Pretty charts are not digitalization. A real industrial IoT platform has to change operator behavior in real time, not just serve as corporate decoration.

The Big IIoT Lie: Why 75% of Dashboards Are Useless

The "Vanity Metrics" Epidemic #

I walk through industrial plants every week. In almost all of them I see giant 60-inch LCD screens hanging over the floor, showing colorful bar charts and speedometers. They look impressive when executives come to visit.

But when I ask the line operator, "What do you do differently when that red bar goes up?", the answer is usually a blank stare.

That's not Industry 4.0. That's Digital Theater.

The Difference Between Data, Information and Action #

Most IIoT projects fail because they obsess over Capture and Visualization and ignore Action.

  • Data: "Temperature = 85°C." (Useless on its own.)
  • Information: "Temperature rose 10 degrees in 5 minutes." (Context.)
  • Knowledge: "If it keeps rising, the motor will burn out in 20 minutes." (Prediction.)
  • ACTION: "Alert the technician: clean the inlet filter NOW." (Value.)

The "Actionable Dashboard" #

A useful dashboard has to answer 3 questions in under 5 seconds:

  1. Are we winning or losing right now? (Performance vs target.)
  2. Where exactly is the problem? (Bottleneck.)
  3. What do I need to do to fix it? (Prescription.)

If your screen shows "last month's OEE," that's an autopsy. Nobody can fix the past. You need to show "OEE for the last hour" or the "current micro-stop trend."

Less Is More: The Rule of Three #

Don't flood the operator with 20 variables. A fighter pilot has hundreds of sensors, but in combat looks at only 3 things. The plant floor is the same:

  • Current Speed vs Target (Speed Loss)
  • Good Part Count (Quality Loss)
  • Time to Next Scheduled Stop (Downtime)

Everything else (vibration, harmonics, detailed consumption) belongs in secondary layers for engineers, not in day-to-day operations.
