Kaizen: Small Daily Improvements That Transform Results
Don't wait for the perfect six-month project. A hundred small improvements beat one giant change: the Kaizen principles and how to make them stick.

The Kaizen Philosophy #
Kai (change) + Zen (good) = change for the better, continuously.
In the West we love "disruptive innovation": buying an expensive new machine, installing a giant ERP. In Japan they prefer Kaizen: improvements that cost almost nothing and save a little every day.
The Power of Compounding #
Improving 1% a day doesn't sound like much. But do the math:
If you improve 1% every day, by the end of the year you'll be 37 times better.
The 10 Commandments of Kaizen #
- Let go of fixed ideas; reject the way things are.
- Instead of explaining what can't be done, think about how to do it.
- Act on good improvement proposals immediately.
- Don't chase perfection; get 60% of the gain starting now.
- Fix mistakes immediately, on the spot.
- Find ideas in difficulty.
- Look for the real cause: ask the 5 Whys, then look for the solution.
- Take the ideas of ten people instead of waiting for one person's genius.
- Try it, then validate it.
- Improvement never ends.
The Suggestion System: The Engine of Kaizen #
Toyota receives hundreds of thousands of suggestions a year and puts the vast majority into practice.
Why traditional suggestion boxes fail:
- Nobody reviews them.
- Responses take months.
- They only look for million-dollar ideas.
- "That's not your job."
How to make it work:
- Simple format: "Problem" + "Proposed solution." No bureaucracy.
- Fast response (24-48 h): Even if the answer is "no," explain why.
- Autonomy: If it's cheap and doesn't affect safety, just do it!
- Recognition: Before/after photos in the cafeteria. It doesn't have to be money.
Kaizen Events (Kaizen Blitz) #
For bigger problems, run a "Kaizen week":
- Team: 5-8 cross-functional people dedicated 100% for 3-5 days.
- Goal: Cut setup time by 50%, eliminate a chronic defect.
- Golden rule: Implement the changes DURING the week. No "making a plan for later."
- Friday: Results presentation and celebration.
