MQTT for Plant Engineers: The Modern Industrial Protocol
Leave heavyweight protocols behind. Learn why MQTT is the language of industrial IoT and how to deploy it between your PLCs and the cloud.

💡 Why MQTT?
Where HTTP says "give me the data every 5 seconds", MQTT says "I will tell you ONLY when something changes". That saves bandwidth and battery on wireless sensors.
Concepts for the OT engineer #
If you come from the PLC world, think of MQTT as a notice board (the broker):
- Publisher: The PLC sending the temperature value.
- Subscriber: The dashboard or MES that wants to see it.
- Topic: The address (e.g. "SectionA/Oven1/Temp").
MQTT vs Modbus/OPC UA
They are not enemies, they are complementary. You use Modbus to read the sensor locally, and MQTT to move that value across the plant or up to the corporate office.

How to get started #
Most modern PLCs (Siemens S7-1200/1500, Opto22, Schneider) already ship native MQTT libraries. If you have a legacy PLC, an iGromi Gateway can act as an instant translator.
