iGromi vs Siemens Opcenter: German MES vs Chilean MES in 2026
Opcenter (formerly SIMATIC IT) is Siemens' MES. Robust, complex and very expensive. When is it worth the price? An honest technical comparison.

The "Made in Germany" MES: Siemens Opcenter #
Siemens renamed its MES three times in ten years (SIMATIC IT → Opcenter Execute → Opcenter APS). That already tells you something about its complexity.
It is the MES of choice for automotive and pharmaceutical plants. It is also the one IT teams fear most.
🎯 Executive Summary
- Opcenter if: You make auto parts or electronics, need full MOM (Manufacturing Operations Management) and have budget for an enterprise project.
- iGromi if: You only need OEE + basic traceability, want implementation in a tightly scoped pilot (not in years) and a per-plant quote.
Comparison Table: Functionality vs Complexity #
| Feature | iGromi | Siemens Opcenter |
|---|---|---|
| Price (10 users, 5 lines) | Quoted per plant | High perpetual license + annual support |
| Typical implementation | Tightly scoped pilot | 9-24 months |
| Siemens PLC integration | S7comm (native) | TIA Portal integration |
| Advanced Planning (APS) | ❌ No | ✅ Opcenter APS (Preactor) |
| Product genealogy | Basic (lot) | Serial-level (full) |
| Quality Management (QMS) | ❌ External | ✅ Opcenter Quality |
| Material Management | ❌ Basic | ✅ Integrated WMS |
| OEE dashboards | ✅ Preconfigured | Custom (Power BI/Grafana) |
| Certified consultants | 0 needed | 3-10 (Siemens Partners) |
| Cloud SaaS | ✅ Available | ⚠️ Opcenter X (new) |
1. Price: German Engineering Comes at a Cost #
Siemens Opcenter Execute (5 lines, 10 users):
- Base licenses: the biggest line item (perpetual, but "outdated" within 5 years)
- Infrastructure: Windows servers + SQL Server Enterprise
- Implementation: with certified Siemens partners, it often costs as much as the licenses
- Training: courses in Germany or remote
- Annual support (SMA): 18-22% of the license value, every year
Year 1 total: licenses, infrastructure, implementation and training combined.
5-year total: add four years of annual support.
iGromi MES (5 lines):
- Base platform + modules: quoted per plant (no per-tag fees)
- Infrastructure: Edge PC on the plant floor (quoted)
- Implementation: in a tightly scoped pilot
- Support: quoted separately
iGromi's cost depends on how many lines, cameras and users you connect; it is quoted per plant. Compare it against the Opcenter total with your quote in hand.
2. Implementation: The 18-Month "German Project" #
Siemens Opcenter (Typical Timeline):
- Months 1-3: Requirements workshops (in Germany if you're a VIP customer).
- Months 4-9: Process modeling in Opcenter (materials, routings and resources configuration).
- Months 10-15: Custom interface development (C#/.NET), SAP/ERP integration.
- Months 16-18: UAT, "big bang" go-live.
Risk: Siemens projects are known for running 6-12 months over, and the final budget usually lands well above the original one.
iGromi (Agile Timeline):
- Stage 1: Connect to Siemens PLCs over S7comm and read the counters.
- Stage 2: Live OEE dashboards, product configuration.
- Stage 3: Operator training, fine-tuning.
Go-live: at the end of a tightly scoped pilot, not in 18 months.
3. Siemens Integration: Opcenter Wins by Default #
If your plant is 100% Siemens (S7-1500, TIA Portal, WinCC), Opcenter is the perfect match:
- You import tags straight from TIA Portal.
- WinCC HMIs talk natively to Opcenter.
- The historian (Process Historian) captures EVERYTHING without programming.
iGromi reads Siemens too, but:
- We use S7comm (an open protocol).
- You have to define manually which tags to read.
- There's no magic "auto-discovery."
Verdict: If you're Siemens-only, Opcenter has the technical edge. But is that edge worth its cost? Your call.
4. Enterprise Functionality: Opcenter Is a Full MOM #
Siemens Opcenter isn't just an MES. It's MOM (Manufacturing Operations Management):
Included Modules:
- APS (Preactor): Production planning with sequence optimization.
- Quality: SPC (Statistical Process Control), automatic quality certificates.
- Performance: OEE, downtime analysis, TPM.
- Intelligence: Advanced BI, predictive machine learning.
iGromi only does:
- Real-time OEE.
- Basic lot-level traceability.
- Web dashboards.
If you need APS + Quality + integrated WMS, Opcenter is your only enterprise option.
5. ROI: Justifying the Investment #
Example: Electronics Plant (8 SMT lines, 3 shifts)
Opcenter scenario:
- Perpetual licenses
- Implementation with a certified partner
- Hardware: servers
- Annual support (years 2-5)
- 5-year total: ask your partner for the full figure before you compare.
Opcenter benefits (estimated):
- Lower WIP → less capital tied up in inventory.
- Higher OEE → more output from the same lines.
- Full traceability → lower recall costs.
- Total 5-year benefit: estimate it with your own WIP, OEE and recall data.
ROI: in a large plant that needs APS and strict traceability, the benefit can exceed the cost, but the payback comes in years, not months.
iGromi scenario:
- Quoted per plant: depends on how many lines, cameras and users you connect
iGromi benefits (estimated):
- OEE +8% (less than Opcenter, since there's no APS) → more output from the same lines.
- Total 5-year benefit: estimate it with your own OEE data.
ROI: subtract your quote from that estimated benefit and compare it with Opcenter's.
"Opcenter gives you MORE absolute benefit. iGromi gives you a BETTER return on investment. It depends on your budget."
6. When Siemens Opcenter Is Mandatory #
1. Automotive (Tier 1/2)
If you supply BMW, Mercedes or VW, they will REQUIRE Opcenter-level traceability.
2. All-Siemens Plants
If you already have a large Siemens investment (PLCs, drives, HMIs), Opcenter maximizes it.
3. Complex Discrete Manufacturing
If you build electronics with 500+ components per BOM, you need Opcenter's APS.
7. When iGromi Makes Sense #
1. Simple Process Manufacturing
Food, beverages, basic chemicals → iGromi delivers OEE without enterprise complexity.
2. Limited Budget
If an enterprise project would burn through your budget, iGromi gives you the core of the benefit with a per-plant quote.
3. Urgent Implementation
If your boss gave you one month to get live OEE, Opcenter is out of the question.
Verdict: Porsche vs Corolla #
Opcenter is a Porsche 911. German engineering, brutal power, status. But expensive to buy, and it runs on premium gas.
iGromi is a Toyota Corolla Hybrid. Reliable, economical, easy to maintain. It won't impress anyone at the Nürburgring, but it gets you everywhere.
