Dockerized: How to Deploy a Modern SCADA in 15 Minutes
Hands-on tutorial: stop paying for huge licenses. Build a complete industrial monitoring stack with InfluxDB, Grafana and Node-RED on Docker.

Goodbye, "Dependency Hell" #
We'll assume you already know what SCADA is and its classic architecture; this is about what changes when you containerize it. Remember when installing a SCADA required a specific Windows Server, an exact .NET Framework version, SQL Server, and a prayer that it wouldn't clash with the antivirus? Those days are over.
With Docker, we package all the software and its dependencies into lightweight "containers." It runs the same on your development laptop as on the industrial server on the plant floor.
The "IGT" Stack (Influx - Grafana - Telegraf) + Node-RED #
Let's build the Swiss Army knife of the Industrial IoT:
- Node-RED: The glue. Reads Modbus from the PLC and converts it to JSON.
- InfluxDB: The time-series database. Stores millions of sensor readings blazingly fast.
- Grafana: The pretty face. Professional visualization.
The Magic File: docker-compose.yml #
Create a text file with this and your infrastructure is ready:
version: '3'
services:
nodered:
image: nodered/node-red
ports: ["1880:1880"]
volumes: ["./nodered_data:/data"]
influxdb:
image: influxdb:1.8
ports: ["8086:8086"]
volumes: ["./influx_data:/var/lib/influxdb"]
grafana:
image: grafana/grafana
ports: ["3000:3000"]
links: ["influxdb"]
Run docker-compose up -d in your terminal. Boom! In 30 seconds you have all three services running and connected.
Is This Robust Enough for Industry? #
Absolutely. Tesla, Netflix and Uber run on containers. If you set restart policies (restart: always) and persistent volumes, it's more stable than any monolithic SCADA running on Windows. If a process crashes, Docker brings it back in milliseconds.
