Siemens S7-1200 red ERROR LED (SF): meaning and fix
On the S7-1200 the red indicator is called ERROR. "SF" (System Fault) is the S7-300 and S7-400 naming, and it is still what most people search for. How the LED behaves separates two very different situations.
What causes it
- Flashing red together with RUN/STOP: the CPU detected an error that does not stop it, usually a hardware configuration, signal module or communication error.
- Solid red: a fault that takes the CPU out of service. It usually comes from the CPU itself or from its power supply.
- All three indicators flashing at once: the CPU is starting up or updating firmware. It is not a fault.
- A signal module wrongly addressed or removed from the rack after the configuration was downloaded.
- 24 V supply below tolerance or dropping under load.
How to diagnose it
- 1Before touching anything, write down the exact LED pattern: solid or flashing, and what RUN/STOP and MAINT are doing at the same time.
- 2Go online with TIA Portal and open the CPU diagnostic buffer. The event is there with its timestamp, which is what actually solves the case; the LED only says something happened.
- 3Compare the downloaded hardware configuration with what is physically in the rack. A module that is gone, or that moved slots, turns the indicator on without any component failing.
- 4Measure the 24 V supply with the machine running, not idle. A drop under load looks exactly like this and does not show up when measured cold.
- 5Only if the LED stays solid and the buffer cannot be read should you suspect the CPU or its power supply.

When the warning comes too late
The diagnostic buffer stores the event with its timestamp, but someone has to go and look. When that information is read automatically and stored next to what the line was doing at that moment, the same symptom stops being a trip to the panel.
