Node-RED · On the Edge

Industrial Node-RED running in your plant, not on a laptop

The iGromi Edge reads the PLC, sensors and cameras read-only and runs your Node-RED flows isolated, next to the panel. Your rules stay yours; the data reaches the operator, the engine and the app.

How it looks today

The test flow that ended up in production

Writes to the PLC with no change control
The flow has no backup
It shuts down when the laptop goes home
The editor was left with no password

Node-RED is quick to start with, which is why many flows are born on someone’s laptop and stay there. It works until the laptop shuts down, someone changes a node or a flow writes to the PLC without anyone reviewing it.

How it works

From the PLC to your flow, and from your flow to whoever decides

Tap each step.

The Edge connects to the PLC network through an interface that only reads. The PLC program is not changed and no inbound ports are opened toward control.

OT security

Read-only toward control. Outbound only toward the outside.

Control networkPLCs and sensorslogic is not touched
In the enclosureEdge with Node-REDprocesses and stores on site
OutboundEngine and appno inbound ports

The Edge is installed with two network interfaces: one reads the PLC network without writing and the other sends filtered data, always from the inside out. Node-RED runs inside, in its own container.

  • The PLC program is not changed
  • No inbound ports are opened toward the control network
  • If a flow fails, reading and logging keep going
  • Offline, the Edge stores and sends what is pending when the link is back

In iGromi OS

What your flow calculates shows up next to the rest of the plant

A variable published from Node-RED appears in iGromi OS with the others: cold rooms, energy, water and M-204 vibration, with their alerts.

In the app

When something goes off normal, it alerts whoever handles it

An alert from the PLC, or on a variable your flow publishes, reaches the plant channel with the machine and the visible cause. Luis takes it, resolves it and records what he did; next time it is cited.

Free app in early access. Reading PLCs and running Node-RED requires the Edge in the plant.

Your data

Where your flows’ data is kept

Free

iGromi cloud, separated per company

The shift app: chat, photo and voice records, and AI that answers with its source.

Premium

A private, isolated cloud for your company

Adds SAP, ERP and spreadsheets. The AI model runs inside that cloud.

Enterprise

Inside your plant, on Edge or on-premise

Adds PLCs, sensors and cameras. The Edge reads the PLC read-only and keeps measuring offline.

FAQ

Node-RED on the Edge FAQ

Does the iGromi Edge include Node-RED?
Yes. Node-RED is a module you enable on the plant Edge, and it runs isolated from the rest of the system. The editor opens in the browser, inside the plant network.
Can a Node-RED flow write to the PLC?
Not with iGromi. The Edge reads the PLC, sensors and cameras read-only and does not require changing the PLC program. Commands to the machine stay in your PLC and your HMI.
What happens if a flow fails?
Node-RED runs in its own isolated container. If a flow goes down, PLC reading, logging and the rest of the Edge applications keep working.
Can I use what my flow calculates in the rest of iGromi?
Yes. Whatever the flow publishes becomes one more plant variable, with its name, and can be used in dashboards, alerts and reports without duplicating the logic.
What happens if the internet goes down?
The Edge keeps measuring and stores in the plant. When the connection is back, it sends what is pending in order and the record has no gaps.
Do I need to know how to code?
For the common cases, no: in Node-RED you wire nodes together. For your own indicator you write a short JavaScript function, for example energy cost per box.
Which plan includes it?
The in-plant Edge is the Enterprise plan. The app is free and in early access; the Edge is added when you want to connect PLCs, sensors and cameras.
