DS 44 risk map what it includes and a plant example

The risk map puts the risk matrix on the wall: a layout of the site with its main risks marked. Here is what Chile's Supreme Decree 44 (DS 44) requires, the symbols and colors of the official guide, and an example map you can explore zone by zone.

Informational guide, not legal advice. Check the current regulation at the Chilean Labor Ministry guide (Chile's official law library) and consult your safety professional or your mutual insurer (mutualidad).

What DS 44 requires for the risk map

Articles 62 and 63 of DS 44 require it of every employer. The methodology is set by the Chilean Labor Ministry guide, issued through Exempt Resolution 129 of January 29, 2025.

  1. 1. A clear sketch of the zones; it does not have to be exact, and an existing one works.
  2. 2. The main risks from the matrix, each with its symbol and the color of its level.
  3. 3. If an area has many, red and orange come first; psychosocial risk always goes on.
  4. 4. Site-wide risks top left; the legend bottom right.

No matrix, no map: start with the IPER risk matrix

The symbols and colors on the map are the risks and levels from the matrix. The IPER (hazard identification and risk assessment) matrix spreadsheet calculates each risk's level; the map is drawn afterwards from those results.

  • · Probability times consequence using the method of Chile's Public Health Institute (ISP): expected loss value (VEP) and level calculated and color-coded
  • · Controls in the order of article 9, from elimination to PPE, recording the highest control used
  • · Owner, deadline, status and next annual review, ready for the preventive program
  • · Alerts for high risks controlled only with PPE, rows without a control and overdue deadlines

It does not replace an expert assessment or the Chilean Ministry of Health (MINSAL) protocols.

Frequently asked questions

Risk map FAQ

What is the DS 44 risk map?
It is a graphic representation of the workplace showing the occupational risks that can affect people's life and health. Article 62 of DS 44, Chile's Supreme Decree 44 on occupational safety and health management, requires employers to keep it on the premises, with a layout of the site and the main risks from the risk matrix marked with symbols.
Which companies must have a risk map?
Article 62 requires it of all employers, regardless of size. It must be posted in visible spots at each workplace and updated every time the risk matrix changes.
Is there an official guide for making the risk map?
Yes. Chile's Undersecretariat of Social Security issued the official guide for preparing occupational risk maps within employer organizations through Exempt Resolution 129 of January 29, 2025, published in the Diario Oficial (Chile's official gazette) on February 18, 2025.
What symbols and colors does the map use?
Under that guide, caution signs: a yellow triangle with a black border and symbol, using the pictograms in its Annex 1 or those provided by the employer's mutual insurer. Each risk's level is shown by its color: red, orange, yellow or green, depending on the type of risk.
Which risks go on the map if there are many?
The guide lets you prioritize red and orange risks over yellow and green ones in the same area, except psychosocial risk, which is always included. A risk that spans the whole site goes in the top left corner, and the legend in the bottom right.
Who prepares the risk map?
The employer, with technical support from its prevention department or another specialized entity and the participation of the joint health and safety committee (art. 63). Without a department, it can ask its mutual insurer or the ISL (Chile's public occupational safety institute) for help; without a committee, the occupational safety and health delegate takes part.
